Thesis Assesment
PROCEDURE IN EACH PARTNER
Broad university-wide general information related to Master’s thesis can be found here:
Specific information regarding the procedure at UPV:
-
- The Final Master Thesis will be the result of at least 300 hours of individual work, which will be reflected by the student in a written report in accordance to the previously assigned supervisor acting as Director. Whether the work is carried out in one of the Associated Partners, a Director must be allocated from the respective University unless the supervisor already belongs to the staff of the REM+.
- The VIVA will be scheduled with Tribunals made up of three members appointed by the University Academic Board (UAB) from the whole body of recognized lecturers of the Master. The Director will act as President, whereas the rest of the members will be assigned according to their close expertise in the field to be evaluated. Besides an additional member will be scheduled as a Reserve. Only Tribunals with all the three members will be accepted for the VIVA.
- At least 7 working days before the date scheduled for the VIVA, the following documents must be submitted by the candidate through email to the REM+ Secretariat info@master-remplus.eu:
- One (1) fully electronic version (in pdf format) of the Report (download Template).
- The “Director’s endorsement for the VIVA” form signed (electronic signature is accepted)
The REM+ Secretariat will distribute each document to the corresponding JPB representative where the VIVA will be scheduled.
- The respective UAB will elaborate the “List of tribunals for the VIVAS”, according to the template provided including all the info such as place and the sequencing, which will be shared to all the students and members of the tribunals, including for the latters the respective report in pdf format for previous lecture, prior to the VIVA.
- Attendance is free for the general public interested unless specific statement of Confidentiality is requested through the “Director’s endorsement for the VIVA” form.
- The Secretary of each Tribunal will start the Academic Act of defense, through the lecture of a brief text: “The tribunal formed by (SHORT PRESENTATION OF THE THREE MEMBERS AND THEIR ROLES) will evaluate the work entitled (FULL TITLE OF THE WORK) carried out by (FULL NAME OF THE STUDENT), under the supervision of (FULL NAME OF THE DIRECTOR/TUTOR). Please kindly remember that you are allowed between 10-15 minutes to present your work, so after that the Tribunal will have up to 10 minutes to ask questions related to it. Please feel free to start when you feel ready.”
- Each student will have between 10-15 minutes to present the Thesis, using the means he/she deems most convenient: blackboard, powerpoint, etc. If others, please communicate it to the JPB representative with time enough. The presentation must be focused on the main contributions addressed by each student.
- The evaluation procedure will be adjusted to the “Evaluation form” agreed by the JPB, which will be provided to all the members of the different tribunals. The following aspects will be evaluated: general structure of the report, quality of the results achieved, presentation, supporting material, compliance with the time allocated and finally the answers given to the Tribunal. The final mark will be weighted 60% for the President and 40% for the rest of members.
- There will be an evaluation previous to the VIVA, carried out by the President of each tribunal regarding general aspects, such as: Goal fulfillment, technical complexity, interest shown by the student and quality of the results, all of them through the Evaluation form provided.
- During the VIVA, additional aspects related to the written report (formal aspects, writing, graphics and general structure) and to the presentation itself (auxiliary material, oral presentation, corporal expression, management of the time and answers given to the questions) will also be evaluated. The printed copy of the report will be available for any of the members of the Tribunal during the VIVA.
- After the student’s presentation, the members of the Tribunal will ask the questions they consider appropriate, for a maximum of 10 minutes, starting from the Vocal and continuing from the Secretary and finally the President.
- After that, the candidate will be kindly invited to leave the room and the Tribunal will deliberate about the final mark to be unanimously assigned always through the evaluation form.
- The Secretary of each Tribunal will upload all the marks supplied by all the members to the evaluation form in the highlighted spaces provided, so the EXCEL spreadsheet will automatically calculate the final mark. After printing it, the form will be signed by all members.
- The Candidate will be allowed to return to the room, so the Secretary of the Tribunal will communicate the result of the evaluation: Only “PASS” or “NO PASS” without any specific mention of the final mark obtained through the Evaluation form.
- If the result is “NO PASS”, the Tribunal will unanimously decide the way to proceed with the re-evaluation of the student, which will be communicated to him/her, including eventual deadlines.
- Finally, the Secretary of each Tribunal will submit the next documents (in electronic format) to the REM Secretariat, keeping the originals for final deposit, and the VIVA will be concluded:
-
- Director’s endorsement
- Report
- Evaluation form fully signed
Specific information regarding the procedure at ECN:
- The student must submit the thesis before the defense (at least 1 week before, so that the jury has time to read it carefully).
- There is a maximum length for the document that is fixed to 60 pages. Keep in mind that this is what the jury is reading to evaluate the quality of your research work. It should consequently present the whole work (methods, results, etc.) as well as possible difficulties, so that the jury has all elements to provide an evaluation. The restriction in length should lead to a focus on the important features of the work. Note that some annexes can be added.
- There is no imposed format for the document. However, this is assumed to be a research report. Therefore, it usually follows some rules in terms of content (e.g. a classical structure: Abstract / Introduction / Literature Review / Methods / Results / Discussion-Conclusion / Bibliography). It should include ECN logo together with REM+ logo.
- For the defense, it will be scheduled end of August (viva needs to take place before august 31st). It will be organized with a 30 minutes presentation followed by 30 minutes questions from the jury (composed of at least 2 members).
